Best Time to Visit Disney World: How to Choose the Right Time for Your Family
If you've started researching a Disney World vacation, you've probably discovered one thing pretty quickly.
Everyone has an opinion about the best time to visit.
Some families swear by January because of lower crowds.
Others love October for Halloween festivities.
Some wouldn't dream of missing the holiday decorations in December.
So... who's right?
Honestly, they all are.
One of the biggest misconceptions about planning a Disney vacation is that there's one perfect week to visit.
There isn't.
Every season has its advantages, and every season has trade-offs.
The best time to visit Disney World isn't about finding the "best" month on someone else's crowd calendar.
It's about finding the month that best matches your family's schedule, priorities, budget, and travel style.
As a travel advisor, that's one of my favorite conversations to have with clients.
Because when we choose the right travel dates first, everything else becomes easier.
💡 Quick Answer
If you're looking for a quick recommendation, here's my advice:
Want lower crowds? Consider late January, early February, or September.
Looking for the lowest prices? Late August and September often offer excellent value.
Dreaming of holiday decorations? November and early December are hard to beat.
Prefer cooler weather? February, March, and November are usually very comfortable.
Want to experience EPCOT festivals? Spring and Fall are fantastic choices.
Every family has different priorities, so don't worry if your ideal travel dates don't line up perfectly with someone else's recommendation.
How I Help Families Choose Their Travel Dates
When clients ask me, "When should we go to Disney?" my first question is never about crowds.
Instead, I ask:
"What do you want your vacation to feel like?"
Some families want to ride as many attractions as possible.
Others are perfectly happy spending an afternoon by the resort pool before heading back to the parks.
Some are celebrating a birthday.
Others are checking a lifelong dream off their bucket list.
Your answer changes my recommendation.
That's why I don't believe in one-size-fits-all advice.
January
January is one of Disney World's quieter months once the New Year holiday crowds head home.
The weather is generally comfortable, making it easier to spend long days in the parks without the intense Florida heat.
This is a wonderful time for families with preschool-aged children, couples, and anyone with a flexible schedule.
Best For
Lower crowd levels
Comfortable weather
Budget-conscious travelers
Shorter attraction waits
Something to Consider
Some attractions may temporarily close for routine maintenance during January.
Cool mornings can also catch people by surprise, so packing a light jacket is a good idea.
⭐ Kasi Recommends
If your family's schedule allows, January is one of my favorite months for a relaxed Disney vacation.
You may not have every special event happening, but you'll often enjoy a much calmer experience.
February
February continues many of the advantages of January.
Pleasant temperatures make walking around the parks much more enjoyable than during the summer months.
Crowd levels are still manageable for much of the month, although holiday weekends can become noticeably busier.
Best For
Comfortable weather
Families with younger children
Adults traveling without school-age kids
Guests who enjoy longer park days
Something to Consider
If your travel dates include Presidents' Day weekend, expect larger crowds and higher prices.
⭐ Kasi Recommends
February is one of the easiest months to recommend if your schedule is flexible.
The weather is often beautiful, and many families appreciate being able to enjoy the parks without the summer heat.
March
March is a month of transitions.
Early March can still feel fairly comfortable, but as Spring Break begins across the country, crowd levels often increase.
The weather is usually excellent, making it one of the most enjoyable months to spend time outdoors.
Best For
Beautiful weather
Flower lovers visiting during the EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival
Families who don't mind a little more activity
Something to Consider
Spring Break dates vary by school district, which means crowd levels can change dramatically depending on when you visit.
⭐ Kasi Recommends
If your schedule allows, aim for early March before many Spring Break vacations begin.
You'll often enjoy many of the same weather benefits with fewer people in the parks.
April
April can be a wonderful time to visit Disney World, especially after the busiest Spring Break weeks have passed.
The weather is typically warm without reaching the intense heat of summer, making it comfortable for long park days. Beautiful landscaping and seasonal flowers also make this one of the prettiest times of year to visit.
Best For
Families looking for warm weather
Guests who enjoy spending time outdoors
EPCOT festival visitors
Something to Consider
If your travel dates fall during Spring Break or around Easter, expect larger crowds and higher prices.
⭐ Kasi Recommends
If you have flexibility, try visiting later in April after many schools have returned to class. You can often enjoy pleasant weather with a more relaxed atmosphere.
May
May is one of my favorite months to recommend.
Schools are still in session for many families, crowd levels are often manageable during parts of the month, and summer weather hasn't fully arrived.
It's a great balance of comfortable temperatures and longer park hours.
Best For
Families with preschool-aged children
Couples
Guests looking for a quieter visit before summer
Something to Consider
Toward the end of May, crowd levels begin increasing as schools start summer break.
⭐ Kasi Recommends
Early May is one of those "sweet spot" times that many families overlook. If your schedule allows, it's absolutely worth considering.
June
June often gets a bad reputation simply because it's summer.
Yes, it's warmer.
Yes, it's busier than winter.
But that doesn't mean it's a bad time to visit.
If your children are in school, June may be one of your best opportunities to take a family vacation.
The key is adjusting your expectations.
Plan for breaks.
Take advantage of your resort pool.
Start your mornings early, then return to the resort during the hottest part of the afternoon if your family needs a break.
Best For
School-aged children
Families who enjoy longer park hours
Guests who don't mind warmer weather
Something to Consider
Afternoon thunderstorms are common during the summer, so pack a lightweight poncho and keep an eye on the forecast.
⭐ Kasi Recommends
Don't let the heat scare you away.
With the right plan, June can still be an incredible time to visit Disney.
July
July is one of the hottest months of the year in Central Florida, but it's also full of excitement.
Families traveling during summer break often enjoy extended park hours, lively entertainment, and a fun vacation atmosphere.
The biggest adjustment is pacing yourself.
Drink plenty of water.
Take indoor breaks.
Enjoy shows, restaurants, and attractions with air conditioning throughout the day.
Best For
Families traveling during summer vacation
Guests who enjoy energetic park atmospheres
Travelers celebrating summer holidays
Something to Consider
Heat and humidity can be intense, especially in the afternoon.
Comfortable shoes, lightweight clothing, sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle become even more important.
⭐ Kasi Recommends
I always encourage summer travelers to schedule downtime.
Some of the best afternoons are spent relaxing by the pool before heading back into the parks for the evening.
August
August is an interesting month because it changes as the weeks go on.
Early August still feels like peak summer.
By late August, many schools have returned to session, and crowd levels often begin to decrease.
This can create excellent opportunities for families with flexible schedules.
Best For
Budget-conscious travelers
Families with preschool-aged children
Guests looking for lower crowd levels later in the month
Something to Consider
It's still very hot.
Afternoon rain showers remain common, so lightweight rain gear is always a good idea.
⭐ Kasi Recommends
If your schedule is flexible, late August can offer a great combination of lower prices and lighter crowds.
Just be prepared for Florida's summer weather.
Summer Doesn't Have to Be Miserable
One of the biggest myths I hear is that summer is a terrible time to visit Disney World.
I don't believe that's true.
Summer simply requires a different strategy.
Instead of trying to stay in the parks from rope drop until closing every day, build in time to rest.
Enjoy your resort.
Take a swim.
Eat lunch somewhere cool and comfortable.
Then head back into the parks later in the afternoon or evening.
Your vacation doesn't have to be nonstop to be unforgettable.
In fact, some of the happiest families I work with are the ones who give themselves permission to slow down.
Kasi Recommends: Summer Packing Essentials
If you're visiting during the summer months, I wouldn't leave home without:
A refillable water bottle
Cooling towels or a portable fan
Lightweight, broken-in walking shoes
A portable phone charger
Sunscreen
Ponchos
Extra socks
These simple items can make a big difference in your comfort throughout the day.
September
September is one of Disney World's best-kept secrets.
Yes, it's still hot.
Yes, afternoon rain showers are common.
But if you're looking for lighter crowds and some of the year's most attractive pricing, September is absolutely worth considering.
For families with preschool-aged children or flexible schedules, it can be an excellent opportunity to experience Disney at a slower pace.
You'll also begin to see Halloween decorations and seasonal treats throughout the parks, adding a little extra magic to your visit.
Best For
Budget-conscious families
Lower crowd levels
Halloween fans
Families with flexible schedules
Something to Consider
The weather is still very warm, and it's important to plan for frequent hydration, sunscreen, and indoor breaks throughout the day.
⭐ Kasi Recommends
September is one of my favorite months for families who can travel outside of a traditional school calendar.
The combination of lighter crowds and lower prices makes it hard to overlook.
October
If someone asked me to recommend just one month to visit Disney World, October would probably be my answer.
The weather begins becoming more comfortable, Halloween festivities are in full swing, and there's an excitement throughout the parks that's hard to describe until you've experienced it yourself.
It's one of those times of year that simply feels special.
Best For
First-time visitors
Families with school-aged children
Halloween lovers
Comfortable park days
Something to Consider
Because October is so popular, booking early gives you the best chance of getting your preferred resort and dining reservations.
⭐ Kasi Recommends
October checks almost every box.
Beautiful decorations.
Comfortable weather.
Seasonal treats.
Fun atmosphere.
If your schedule allows, it's one of my favorite times to help families plan a Disney vacation.
November
November offers one of my favorite combinations of the entire year.
Early in the month, you'll often enjoy comfortable weather, festive holiday decorations, and an atmosphere that feels exciting without reaching the intensity of Thanksgiving week.
It's also one of the most beautiful times to explore Disney Resorts, where each hotel begins decorating for the holidays.
Best For
Holiday decorations
Cooler temperatures
Families looking for a festive atmosphere
Couples
Something to Consider
Thanksgiving week brings significantly larger crowds, so I usually recommend visiting earlier in the month if your schedule allows.
⭐ Kasi Recommends
Early November is one of Disney's hidden gems.
If someone told me they wanted holiday magic without Christmas week crowds, this is where I'd start.
December
There are few places that celebrate Christmas quite like Disney World.
From beautifully decorated resorts to festive entertainment and seasonal treats, it's a magical time to visit.
If Christmas is your favorite holiday, Disney in December is something you'll never forget.
Best For
Christmas lovers
Holiday traditions
Multi-generational family vacations
Special celebrations
Something to Consider
Crowd levels and prices increase significantly as Christmas approaches.
If possible, I recommend visiting during the first half of December rather than the weeks surrounding Christmas and New Year's.
⭐ Kasi Recommends
Early December gives you much of the holiday magic with a more relaxed atmosphere than Christmas week.
It's one of the easiest recommendations I make.
If It Were My Family...
If I had complete flexibility, these would be the months I'd recommend most often.
🥇 October
If you're looking for the classic Disney experience, October is hard to beat.
The weather is more comfortable, the parks are beautifully decorated for Halloween, and there's an energy that makes every park day feel a little more special.
🥈 Early November
Holiday decorations begin appearing, temperatures are pleasant, and you can experience the excitement of the season before Thanksgiving crowds arrive.
🥉 February
Comfortable weather and generally lighter crowds make February a wonderful choice for families who aren't tied to a traditional school schedule.
💙 Kasi's Corner
One of the biggest mistakes I see families make is waiting for the "perfect" time to visit Disney.
The truth is...
There isn't one.
Every month has advantages.
Every month has trade-offs.
Some families can only travel during summer break.
Others have preschoolers and can visit in September.
Some dream about Christmas decorations.
Others want the lowest possible budget.
None of those choices are wrong.
My job isn't to convince you that one month is better than another.
It's to help you choose the time that's best for your family.
Because when your vacation fits your schedule, your budget, and your priorities, you'll spend a lot less time worrying about crowd calendars and a lot more time making memories together.
