How to Choose the Best Disney World Resort for Your Family
Choosing where to stay is one of the biggest decisions you'll make when planning a Disney World vacation. If you've started researching resorts, you've probably noticed something pretty quickly: everyone has a favorite.
One person insists you have to stay on the Monorail. Another says a Value Resort is all you'll ever need. Someone else tells you to splurge on a Deluxe Resort because "it's worth it."
So... who's right?
Honestly, they all might be.
One of the biggest misconceptions about planning a Disney vacation is that there's one "best" resort. There isn't. The right Disney Resort depends on your family's budget, travel style, priorities, and how you plan to spend your time.
As a travel advisor, I don't start by asking which resort catches your eye. I start by asking questions like:
Will you spend most of your time in the parks or enjoying your resort?
Are you traveling with toddlers, teenagers, grandparents, or a little bit of everyone?
Is convenience your biggest priority?
Are you celebrating a special occasion?
What's your vacation budget?
Those answers tell me far more than any online resort ranking ever could.
Quick Answer
If you're looking for the short version:
Choose a Value Resort if your goal is maximizing your vacation budget while still enjoying all the benefits of staying on Disney property.
Choose a Moderate Resort if you want a balance of comfort, theming, and value.
Choose a Deluxe Resort if location, convenience, and resort amenities are worth the additional investment.
The good news? There isn't a wrong choice. Disney does an incredible job creating immersive resorts at every price point.
Before You Choose a Resort
Here's one piece of advice I share with almost every client:
Don't choose a resort because it's the most popular. Choose it because it fits the vacation you're hoping to have.
If your family plans to leave for the parks early each morning and return after fireworks, you may not get much value from paying for premium resort amenities you'll rarely use.
On the other hand, if you're planning resort afternoons, pool days, or leisurely dinners, spending more on your hotel can absolutely be worth it.
The "best" resort isn't always the most expensive one. It's the one that supports the way your family likes to vacation.
Disney Value Resorts
Disney's Value Resorts are colorful, fun, and designed for families who want to spend most of their vacation exploring the parks. They're also the most affordable way to stay on Disney property while still enjoying benefits like Disney transportation and Early Theme Park Entry.
A Value Resort may be right for you if:
You'd rather spend your budget on experiences than your hotel room.
You're planning full park days.
You have younger children who will love the larger-than-life Disney theming.
You're looking for the lowest on-property price.
Things to Consider
Rooms are generally smaller, dining options are more limited, and amenities are simpler than what you'll find at Moderate or Deluxe Resorts. For many families, though, that's perfectly fine because the resort is simply a place to recharge between park days.
Kasi Recommends
If you're trying to stay within a budget, don't overlook Disney's Value Resorts. I'd rather help a family stay on property in a Value Resort than stretch their budget so much that money becomes a source of stress during the vacation.
Disney Moderate Resorts
For many families, Moderate Resorts are the sweet spot. They offer more space, beautiful landscaping, additional dining options, and a quieter atmosphere without the higher price tag of a Deluxe Resort.
If you picture your family taking a midday swim, enjoying a relaxing dinner at the resort, or spending a little downtime away from the parks, this category is worth a close look.
A Moderate Resort may be right for you if:
You'd like more space to spread out.
You plan to enjoy your resort as part of the vacation.
You appreciate a quieter setting.
You're looking for the best balance between price and comfort.
Things to Consider
Moderate Resorts cost more than Value Resorts, but many families feel the extra comfort and amenities justify the difference.
Kasi Recommends
If you're celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or simply want a little more room to relax, Moderate Resorts often offer some of the best overall value at Disney World.
Disney Deluxe Resorts
Deluxe Resorts offer Disney's highest level of accommodations, incredible theming, signature dining, and some of the most convenient locations on property. Many are within walking distance, a Monorail ride, or a short boat ride from one or more parks.
That convenience can make a huge difference, especially if you're traveling with young children or planning afternoon breaks back at the resort.
A Deluxe Resort may be right for you if:
Convenience is one of your highest priorities.
You enjoy spending time at your resort.
You're celebrating a once-in-a-lifetime vacation or special milestone.
Resort dining and premium amenities are important to your family.
Things to Consider
A higher price doesn't automatically make a Deluxe Resort the best choice. If your family plans to spend every waking hour in the parks, you may get more value from staying at a Moderate or even a Value Resort.
Kasi Recommends
Choose a Deluxe Resort because you'll truly enjoy its location and amenities, not because someone online told you it's the "best." The best value comes from paying for features you'll actually use.
Should You Stay on Disney Property?
This is one of the questions I get asked most often, and my answer is almost always the same:
For most first-time visitors, yes.
While there are some excellent off-property hotels near Walt Disney World, staying at a Disney Resort offers conveniences that can make your vacation feel much less stressful.
Disney transportation, Early Theme Park Entry, and the immersive theming all work together to keep you in the magic from the moment you wake up until you head back to your room at night.
That doesn't mean staying off property is the wrong choice. For some families, especially larger groups or those using hotel points, it can make great financial sense.
The key is understanding the trade-offs before you book.
Transportation Matters More Than You Think
When families compare resort prices, they often focus on the nightly rate.
What they don't always consider is how much time they'll spend getting around Walt Disney World.
If you're relying on Disney buses, boats, the Monorail, or the Skyliner, your resort location can make a noticeable difference in your day.
For example, returning to your room for a midday swim or an afternoon nap is much easier when transportation is quick and convenient.
If you know your family enjoys taking breaks, choosing a resort with easy park access may be worth the additional cost.
Kasi Recommends
Think about how your family vacations at home.
If everyone likes to stay on the go from morning until night, transportation may not be a deciding factor.
If your family enjoys slower mornings or afternoon breaks, convenience becomes much more valuable.
Which Resort Fits Your Family?
Rather than asking, "Which Disney Resort is the best?" try asking, "Which resort fits the way my family likes to travel?"
Your family may love a Value Resort if...
Your priority is maximizing your vacation budget.
You'll spend most of your day in the parks.
Your kids will love bold Disney theming.
You'd rather spend money on dining, souvenirs, or an extra park day.
Your family may love a Moderate Resort if...
You want a little more room to relax.
Resort time is part of your vacation plans.
You appreciate beautiful landscaping and a quieter atmosphere.
You're looking for the best balance between comfort and price.
Your family may love a Deluxe Resort if...
Convenience is one of your highest priorities.
You're celebrating a special occasion.
You plan to enjoy signature dining and premium amenities.
Walking, boating, or riding the Monorail to a park sounds like part of the experience.
Common Resort Mistakes
Over the years, I've noticed a few patterns that can lead to disappointment.
Choosing the Most Popular Resort Instead of the Right One
A resort that's perfect for one family may not be the best fit for yours.
Social media is full of opinions, but your family's priorities matter far more than someone else's favorite hotel.
Spending Too Much on the Room
Sometimes families stretch their budget to book a Deluxe Resort, only to spend twelve hours a day in the parks.
If you won't have much time to enjoy the resort, that extra money may be better spent on experiences you'll remember.
Spending Too Little on the Room
The opposite can happen, too.
If you're planning pool days, resort dining, or midday breaks, upgrading to a Moderate or Deluxe Resort could make your vacation noticeably more enjoyable.
Waiting Too Long to Book
Disney Resorts are popular, especially during holidays and school breaks.
Booking early gives you the best chance of finding availability at the resort you really want instead of settling for what's left.
Kasi's Corner
One of my favorite parts of planning Disney vacations is helping families realize they don't have to choose the "best" resort.
They just have to choose the best resort for them.
Some of my clients have had incredible vacations at Disney's Value Resorts because they spent every waking minute making memories in the parks.
Others loved their Deluxe Resort because sitting on the balcony with a cup of coffee while the kids watched giraffes, or walking back to their room after an evening in EPCOT, became some of their favorite memories.
Neither vacation is better.
They're just different.
That's why I spend so much time getting to know my clients before I recommend a resort.
The more I understand your family, the better I can match you with a vacation that truly fits your travel style.

For many families, yes. Staying on Disney property offers convenient transportation, immersive theming, and perks like Early Theme Park Entry, making it a great choice for first-time visitors.

Value Resorts are the most budget-friendly and designed for families who plan to spend most of their time in the parks. Moderate Resorts offer more space and amenities, while Deluxe Resorts provide premium locations, dining, and convenience.

In most cases, I recommend it. Staying on property makes navigating your first Disney vacation simpler and allows you to enjoy the full Disney experience from start to finish.
